Axolotls need a suitable habitat with clean, dechlorinated water and a temperature range of 60-70°F (15-21°C). They also require hiding places such as caves or plants to feel secure, as well as a balanced diet of live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and small fish. Regular water changes and maintenance of water quality are essential for their health and well-being. Additionally, axolotls need proper handling and care to prevent stress and injury. **

The cost of axolotls can vary depending on factors such as their age, size, color, and where they are being purchased from. On average, a young axolotl can cost anywhere from $20 to $50, while larger, more mature axolotls can range from $50 to $100 or more. Rare color variations or specific genetic traits can also significantly impact the price of an axolotl. Additionally, the cost of setting up and maintaining a suitable habitat for an axolotl should also be taken into consideration when considering the overall expense of owning one. **

Axolotls are amphibians and have gills, which allow them to extract oxygen from the water. They do not have lungs like mammals, so they do not need to come to the surface to breathe air. However, they can still absorb some oxygen through their skin, so it is important to keep their water well-oxygenated. While they do not need to breathe air in the same way that mammals do, they still require a well-oxygenated aquatic environment to thrive. **

Neoteny in axolotls refers to the retention of juvenile characteristics into adulthood. This means that axolotls retain their gills, fin-like structures, and the ability to regenerate body parts throughout their entire lives, unlike other amphibians that undergo metamorphosis into a more adult form. This unique trait makes axolotls popular as pets and subjects of scientific research. **
